Fire Brigade Visit

13 Nov 2023

Today, we had some very special visitors... the Fire Brigade. They came to talk to us about keeping safe and their role in helping people.
First we watched a video about how we can keep safe now the nights are getting darker: we can wear bright colours or have a light etc. Then they asked us to think about how we know there may be a fire in a building or house, we said we would hear the fire alarm or smoke detector. Lots of things cause fires such as cookers, electronics, wood burners etc. The children were excellent at thinking of possible risks and some of us had some great ideas of what to do if there was a fire. We talked about shutting the bedroom door and putting pillow by the door to stop the smoke then we could open the window.

The Fire Brigade said that we had two pieces of homework:
  • to check with our grown ups that we have a smoke alarm
  • to ask our grown ups to help us to create an emergency plan for if there was a fire, what would they want us to do.

Next, we leant that the Fire Brigade have lots of jobs, they help in crashes, floods and they rescue animals. We saw some of the equiptment they use to help in these situations. Finally, we got to try our some of the equiptment and wear the gear.
