Bonfire Night and Diwali- Week 9

04 Nov 2019

Welcome back after the half term break. I hope you all had a good week and did lots of super things. The children were very keen to tell their friends what they had been doing during their week off.

This week we have been thinking about different celebrations and have focused on Bonfire Night and Diwali. One of our stories of the week was Hovis the Hedgehog. Which prompted lots of thinking about hedgehogs and autumn. The children have brought books in from home which were about hedgehogs and seasons.

We talked about the fireworks and bonfires we had seen and the children made safety posters to tell me how to stay safe on Bonfire Night.

In our classroom we made lots of different pieces of art, firework pictures and bonfire collages.

We played firework bingo, in maths and practised our pencil control skills. Miss Rogers was really impressed with how many of us can now hold our pencil correctly.

The small world tray became a fire station with a bonfire, which has been very popular with all of the children.

Next week the firemen from Ripon Fire Station are coming to visit us.

As well as Bonfire Night we thought about Diwali. We read the story of Rama and Sita and learnt about why people celebrate Diwali, we wrote Diwali cards and made Rangoli patterns. The children were very interested in the 10 headed monster so we watched a short BBC filmclip which retold the story fo Diwali. The children have asked to listen to this story each day.

We got some new books for our reading corner, the children enjoyed looking at them and are looking forward to reading them at storytime.

We also thought more about autumn and the children used corks to create some beautiful autumn tree pictures.
