Reception children - Start of Year Information (Class 1)

14 Sep 2020

Dear Parents,

We are now into our second week at school, the children have all settled really well and I have enjoyed getting to know them all J

I am working full time in Class 1 and so you will see me every day but there are a few other people who will be working with the children during each week:
Mrs Brammah is our teaching assistant. She works with us on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Mr Whitford is our PE teacher. He teaches PE every Tuesday morning.
Mrs Hebblewhite teaches on a Thursday morning when Miss Wray has her planning and preparation time.

Every day
We have milk and snack during our morning sessions. The children who have signed up to the Cool Milk scheme will be provided with a carton of milk and all children can have a fruit snack from the school fruit delivery. There is no requirement to send in additional snacks.
In order to minimise the amount of items being transported to and from school, book bags will be collected in on a Monday and sent home on a Friday. This will also be the case for water bottles which will be emptied each night.

Homework
The children will be given a reading book on Friday which will need to be returned the following Monday in order for it to be left for the required 72 hours before being used again.
It is expected that children will share a book with an adult every day. An adult in class will read with each child every day and will write notes in their reading record to show how they are getting on.
Our reading scheme begins with books that have no words but come with a story sheet. These books encourage the children to look at the picture clues and develop discussion. The next reading phase aims to use sight words and words that are easily decodable in simple sentences. Children will be given an appropriate book depending on the progress they are making in their phonic understanding.
I will also be sharing the letter sounds that we have been working on each week for you to revisit with your child(ren).  You will be able to find these on the ‘homework’ page on the school website.

Evidence Me
We are going to be using Evidence Me to share ‘wow’ moments with you and I hope that you will use this to share news and events from home too as this would help to build up the wider picture of your learning journey. You can also share the sound work and reading that you do over the weekend to add to your child’s learning journey. Please complete the parent share details in order for me to connect you with your child’s account where you will be able to see their progress.

Curriculum
Our theme to start the term is ‘All about me’. You can find further information about the activities we will be doing and our learning on the class webpage under ‘curriculum’. We will also be following the childrens interests in order to support them on their learning journey.
We are currently carrying out baseline assessments in class which will help to plan the next steps for each child. These assessments involve working 1-1 with an adult to complete a series of tasks. In week 3 there will also be a computer based baseline check, I will send more information on this later.

Get in touch
If you need to contact me you can do this via the school office email or phone. I know you will appreciate how busy it is on a morning and not easy to have a conversation so if you do need to speak to me in person please get in touch and we can arrange a suitable time.

Please check the class page on the school website regularly as I will be adding further information on what we are doing in class there.

Miss Wray
