Science, Maths and a time capsule
05 Jun 2024
This week in class one, we have began a new unit in Science all about plants. We loved sharing our knowledge of plants and trees, idnentifying many of them and naming some. The children learnt about how some plants are wild and others are garden plants. They sorted pictures of them using these categories.
We then moved onto looking at trees, there are two types of tree: evergreen and decious. The children were excellent at spotting the clues to classify a tree. We did a walk of the school grounds to spot plants and trees that grow near us, we found dandelions, willow, an oak tree and much more.
In our lesson on Thursday, we began to look at the parts of trees and plants then label them. A plant has a stem, roots, a flower and leaves whilst a tree has brances, roots, a trunk, leaves and sometimes fruit. The children enjoyed examining plants and trees using magnifying glasses. They were fantastic!
On Tuesday the 18th of June, we are hoping to visit Nosterfield Nature Reserve to extend our learning on planting. The children will spend the day exploring the reserve and learning more about the area. The cost of the trip will be £7.50 which will be payable via ParentPay. We will leave straight after registration and arrive back to school before 3:30pm. Any children who normally have a school lunch will have one provided by the school kitchen. Please let us know asap if your child would prefer to bring their own.
In Maths, the year ones and twos have been looking at measuring mass. They have spent time comparing weight using the terms heavier and lighter. The children are fantastic at using the scales to help them. The year twos have also been reading scales using grams and kilograms.
On Monday, we made a time capsule before the area near the decking was concreted. We put in a few things that were special to us
and wrote a bit about us. We hope that someone in the future find it and enjoys learning a bit about us!
In reception, we have been looking at shape. The chidren have names 2d shapes and looked at how they can be used to make pictures.
Have a lovely weekend!
