DT in class one
24 Oct 2023
We have made it to half-term, YAY! It has been a very long start for the children and summer certianly feels like a long time ago but they have made a great start and I really couldn't be prouder of them. Well done, class one! And well done to all of our lovely parents too, who I am sure are also ready for a rest.
In school, we have been doing our DT week. DT and Art are taught in themed week across the year. This week was food and our focus was on seasonality. Class one decided to make fruit and vegetable kebabs using ingredients that are being harvested at this time of year. We began by researching existing kebabs and seasonality.
Then we designed our kebab, thinking about the purpose and consumer. Next we practiced some of the skills we would use in the making of our products, such as peeling and chopping.
After that, we got making! The children loved selecting their fruit and/or vegetables, preparing them and adding them to their skewer but the best bit was eating them, of course.
Finally, we evaluated our products, considering whether they were suitable for the purpose and audience.
Also this week, we have learnt more about Black History Month. We learnt more about Rosa Parks, an American Activitst in the Black Civil Rights Movement. We learnt about Rosa Parks' life, she grew up in Alabama and she was a seamstress. Rosa Parks was famous for not giving up her seat on the bus for a white person.
The children did some research of their own and together we created a spider diagram all about Rosa Parks.
In our areas, we have enjoyed drawing. We have drawn pictures of rainbows, animals, our families and much more. We are working on writing words to go with our pictures.
The role play was transformed into a Mcdonald's party. The children decorated it with pompoms and made a cake. We have also made some pipe cleaner jewellery.
Have a lovely half-term.
