Science and story writing
11 Jul 2023
With Miss Thewsey, we made slime and sherbert.
We had to measure the ingredients very carefully otherwise it wouldn't work. For the sherbert, we used citric acid, icing sugar and baking soda. Some of us found it a bit sour but others loved it!
To make the slime we mixed water and food colouring then slowly added it to the cornflour. The slime was special because it was solid to touch but liquid when it tipped.
With Mrs Field, we made a different kind of slime which was great fun. Then we tried a bit of chemistry, we put mentos into lemonade and watched are it fizzed and exploded up into the air. It was fantastic!
With Mrs Glover, we met Grandville the tortoise. We enjoyed petting him, feeding him and hearing about how he is cared for. After that, we enjoyed designing a habitat for a tortoise.
Over the last few weeks, year one had been building up their knowledge of traditional tales in order to support them to eventually write their own. We have read lots of stories, identified the purpose and audicence, the success critieria and key features to help us. Last week, we planned our story, choosing a setting, a good character and a bad one. Then finally, this week we got writing. The children have been very excited to write these stories.
Meanwhile, reception have been practising their writing through lots of little activities. This week we did some writing about our Science Day. The children wrote about what happened and their favourite part. They are becoming such fantastic writers!
Have a great weekend.
