Experiments and diary writing
10 Nov 2022
A very busy week in class 1!
This week, in class one the children have been writing diaries. We began our learning last week by reading the story Diary of a Wombat. We used this as a stimulus for our writing alongside other examples. We identifed some success criteria and the year ones practised applying this. The children wrote sentences in the past tense with a particular focus on the verbs.
The reception children wrote down key words to descibe activities they do in the day. The children worked really hard to apply their phonics and form their letters.
Year 1 wrote their diaries from the point of view of the Wombat. They tried very hard to meet the success criteria: using the pronoun 'I', writing about their day and so on.
This week, we also started our science topic. Our learning is focused around our enquiry question: 'Why don't we use the same material for everything?'. We began by identifying different materials that we encounter everyday such as cardboard, wood, metal, plastic and glass. We read the story of Traction Man' and thought about the different materials Traction Man's costumes were made from.
After, with year one, we considered the purpose of objects. We read a poem and looked at some images of "usless objects" such as a chocolate teapot. The children then designed their own useless object. Among their ideas were a cardboard fishtank, a metal dog lead and a chocolate football.
On Friday, we completed an experiement to look at the absorbance of kitchen roll. We tested three kinds of kitchen roll in three different ways to test out our hypothosis. The children enjoyed working together and using their scientific knowledge to discuss what was happening to the paper.
The children have continued to enjoy exploring their areas this week. The children have particularly enjoyed using gel pens this week which were added to our writing area.
We have been using rememberance day to inspire our artwork, making poppy pictures and paintings. The children learnt about why we have remberance day, who we are thinking about and the significance of the poppy. the year one children wrote a thank you poppy to the soldiers who have fought in the wars.
Thank you all for taking the time to speak with me this week at Parents' evening.
Just a reminder that next week we have children in need and a Love Science workshop on Friday ( a very busy day!). Please see the letter below for the workshop details. Thank you to those of you who have already paid.
