DT week in class one
19 Oct 2022
We have really enjoyed DT week. In class 1 and 2 our learning focused on the Windrush Empire. We learnt about Caribbean people were invited to come over to Britain for a new life. The first boat set sail in 1948. When the Caribbean people arrived, they were not all welcomed. Windrush is celebrated among others during Black History Month. As part of the celebrations, people organise festivals.
We researched these for our DT project. We noticed the bright colours and pattens.Once we have researched, we began designing a confetti bag that could be used at one of the festivals. We thought about the size and shape as well as the purpose and materials.
Then we got making, we sewed two pieces of felt together which sounds easier than it was! After that, we measured the handle and attached that. Finally, we decorated our bags with lots of colour!
We linked all of this to other areas of learning such as Music, English and PE. In Music, we learnt about how the Windrush Generation had a significant impact on Music. We studied the song which was .
In English, we used the story Coming To England by Floella Benjamin. This was a true story of how Floella moved from Trinidad to Britian as a young child. The children used this as a stimulus for their writing, making feeling maps, packing lists and writing a diary of Floella's journey on the Empire Windrush.
It has been a great week. We have loved working together and developing new skills.
Thank you for all of you support this half-term. I hope you all have a well deserved rest.
