Week 8 - Autumn and Harvest
23 Oct 2019
This week we have been thinking about Autumn and Harvest. In Collective Worship we practised singing Who made the corn grow? and Cauliflowers Fluffy. On Thursday we had our Harvest Festival where we brought in food for those who don't have as much as we do. We said thank you to God for making all of the yummy food grow.
In class we have been reading The Little Red Hen story, a story about a hen who makes bread.
After reading it once, we were already really good at joining in with repeated sections of the story and pretending to be the different characters. We decorated Little Red Hen pictures and showed off our super colouring skills. We talked about what the animals should have done and what we would have done if we were the Little Red Hen, would we have shared our bread? The Little Red Hen has helped us in our maths work as well, we counted objects from the story and matched them to the correct numeral. We found the total of two groups of objects by combing them and counting them carefully.
All of our classroom areas have been influenced by autumn, the children collected all sorts of autumn treasures with their grown-ups and we were able to fill our Small World Tray with conkers, leaves, sticks and pine cones.
We used these objects to talk about the changes that happen in autumn time and the children knew what colours the leaves turned in autumn; red, yellow, orange, some stay green.
Our indoor and outdoor areas have lots of art opportunities where we have done lots of artwork; autumn leaf printing, tree painting and conker rolling.
As well as all our other work on Wednesday we were visited by the author Andy Seed. The children listened fantastically and engaged so well with what he asked them to do. We joined him reciting a poem about cats. We enjoyed doing the actions and all joined in with repeating the chants. After this we looked at his book ' The clue about poo' where we found out lots about animals; their poo, their homes and the footprints they might leave.
