Week 7- Phonics
16 Oct 2019
This week we have had an extra big push on our phonics, getting us ready for our reading books with words. We have carried on learning our new sounds. This week they were x, e, u, r and we have been concentrating on blending these sounds to read words.
In each Phonics Session the children will be introduced to what they will be learning that day, they then revisit their prior learning by playing games or writing them on our whiteboards, then we learn about our new sound using a variety of styles including stories and songs. We then practise and appply our new learning.
In the areas of our classroom we have had lots of different activities linked to phonics. Some of these included pattern drawing and letter formation, digging for sounds in the sand, fishing for sounds in the water tray and phonics games on the computer. Our reading area has been full of dinosaur stories and information books for us to read and share.
Each morning we do Dough Disco to help strengthen our fine motor skills and help our fingers warm up for writing.
In our book bags we have brought home phonics games to play with our grown ups. Miss Rogers explained how to play each game and we played them against her, we are very excited to go home and see if we can beat our grown ups!
Alongside our phonics sessions we have been looking at more and less than in maths and comparing groups of objects and numbers to see which is more/less or the same. On an afternoon we have continued with our dinosaur theme, Seb brought in a dinosaur fossil and let us look at it, we all got to touch it and described how it felt. The children said the ammonite felt 'bumpy, old, heavy, cold, sand, rocky, precious, cold.'
