Pupil Voice and Amazing Archaeology!

21 May 2024

On Monday, we had a pupil voice afternoon.  It was great to have the opportunity to express our opinions and ideas about things that we do in school.  Mrs Acheson and the Collective Worship Committee worked together on our school vision and the values that we would like to share in our school. We designed awards certificates and the School Council shared their ideas about what kind of rewards we would like to have when we have collected our dojo points.  It was also fun to spend some time to share books in our groups. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon working with children from the other classes.

On Tuesday, we were very lucky to have a group of local archaeologists to come into school to  work with us. We had great fun experiencing how to do an archaeological dig.

Mr Langley explained what the area around us was like thousands of years ago. We found out that our field would have been under an extremely deep layer of ice. We looked at some stone age tools and thought about what they might have been used for thousands of years ago. We saw a  flint tool was found by archaeologists and is believed to have been used 300,000 years ago!

Then, we had a go at working in a trench to see what we could dig up. First, we listened to a safety talk and an explanation about what we were going to do.  We had to respect the spaces between each other to make sure we didn’t accidentally hurt other people with the tools.

We had to dig carefully so that we didn’t damage any objects under the earth. It was fun searching for artefacts from the past. We loved having a go at using the tools to slowly scrape away the layers and it was very exciting wondering what we might find next.

We also used a metal detector to find out if there were any metal objects in the trench.

We found lots of pieces of glass, pottery, fossils, some pieces of a clay pipe and some coal too. There were also some pieces of pencils, bits of plastic and a metal spring.

At the end of the afternoon, the trench had to be refilled so that field was ready for us to play on it again!  Well done, Class 2, your attitude and effort were amazing during the archaeology activities.  Many thanks to Mr Langley and the team from the Nidderdale Archaeological Group.  We are very grateful to them for sharing their time and expert knowledge with us and we have definitely been inspired to do more archaeology digs!

We were very proud of the children who represented our class at the football match on Tuesday. They played well and had a great time showing good team spirit and respect towards each other. They played 4 matches and scored 8 goals in total to win! Well done Class 2.

Well done for working so hard this half-term.  We hope that you have a lovely half-term holiday!
Miss Wray and Mrs Micklefield.
