Class 2 - Ancient Greek Day

27 Sep 2023

We had a very informative day on Monday as we stepped back into ancient Greek times John and Thomas, from Historical Interpretations really brought the era to life for us and helped us to understand what life was like over two thousand years ago.
We would particularly like to thank the Friends of Fountains for funding the workshop for us.  The children had a fabulous day and really enjoyed working alongside their friends from Grewelthorpe School.

John shared lots of information about where the ancient Greeks lived and where they travelled to.  We learnt that artefacts are a very useful way of finding out about the past.   We saw lots of different everyday objects, medical tools, clothing and soldiers armour and weapons.

We were able to explore the artefacts and we made drawings of some of the things we saw.  Some of the objects were unusual and we didn’t know what they were.  We shared ideas and suggestions about what they could be, then John and Tom explained the uses of the objects.  We had some great ideas, even though our suggestions weren't always correct!

Ancient Greek clothing was very simple with tunics and cloaks being made from rectangular pieces of cloth that were pinned together and pulled in with a belt.

We discovered that slavery was common in ancient Greece. Slaves were used in agriculture, stone quarries or mines, and as domestic servants.  Slaves had to obey the commands of their masters and had no rights of their own.

We found out that the ancient Greeks spent a lot of time fighting.  They constantly prepared for war and very young boys began to train as soldiers from an early age.

We enjoyed trying on a variety of helmets and armour. They were quite heavy and it was difficult to see out of them.  The helmets of the most important leaders were also decorated with elaborate plumes and designs.

We all had a great day and learnt lots of facts that have inspired our theme research and will hopefully help us to answer our big question: ‘What did we learn from the Ancient Greeks?’

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
