Firefighters, Fundraising and Science
15 Nov 2023

A big thank you to the firefighters from Ripon Fire Station who came to visit us on Monday. They gave us valuable information about keeping safe in the event of a fire.
The Fire Crew came to school to help us understand more about Fire Safety. The Fire Officer explained how we can prevent being harmed by fire and we learnt a set of rules that we can follow, including how to dial 999 if there is a fire. We were asked to check that we have smoke alarms in our homes and to ask our parents about the safe exit route in the event of a fire in our homes.
We also found out that the Fire Crew have many other jobs, alongside putting out fires. They pump water away from areas that have flooded and rescue animals that have become trapped, they also help when there has been a traffic accident as well as spending time giving advice about fire safety and fire and smoke alarms.
Another very important focus this week has been Anti Bullying. The theme of this year’s Anti-Bullying Week is to
‘Make a Noise About Bullying’. We considered what bullying means and what we can do to stop bullying. We took part in a live lesson and thought about whether different scenarios are banter or bullying and have been thinking about the importance of being kind to each other and respecting each other’s individuality.

We had lots of fun on Children in Need Day and we enjoyed doing the Bearpees Challenge throughout the week. We hope that our fundraising will go towards making a difference to the lives of the children who really need our help. Alongside this important fundraising, the challenge has also enabled us to be active to support our wellbeing and physical health. Together, our class has achieved nearly 3,000 bearpees!
Our current learning focus is science. On Monday, we reminded ourselves about the five different types of science enquiry and the science learning skills that we use to carry out the enquiries:
Our first science topic is 'sound'. We began by thinking about different sound sources. We spent five minutes in silence and listened carefully to all the different sounds that we could hear around the school. We were surprised at how many sounds we could hear when we stopped talking! Then, we considered how sound travels and talked about the sounds we can hear that have travelled from far away, such as thunder, aircraft and sirens. Next week, we will be considering how vibrations from sounds travel to our ears.
Another busy week! Have a great weekend everyone.
