Making a biome

03 Feb 2022

We began our theme lesson this week by recapping our work on rainforests we all became the rainforest and did different actions to help us remember the 4 layers; emergent, canopy, understorey and forest floor.

This week we explored the desert biomes. First we located desert biomes on our world maps and coloured them in.

Then we learnt about what a desert biome was like. We found out that deserts are not always hot places and that you can have cold deserts too. Bu that all deserts are extremely dry places where the animals and plants have had to adapt to survive.
We made our own miniature desert biome in a jar and wrote instructions on how to create them.

We also began putting our art skills into practise by choosing one of the biomes we have learnt about so far; Tundra, Rainforest and Desert and creating a shoe box biome. Here are some of our biomes.

In maths with Miss Rogers we are learning about shapes and geometry. The year 3s have looked at angles, turns, horizontal/vertical lines, parallel/perpendicular lines and 2D shapes. This week we were focusing on 2D shapes and looking at shapes with up to 10 sides. We then applie dour previous learning about angles and parallel lines to these shapes.

The year 4s have looked at angles, turns, 2D shapes including types of triangles and quadrilaterals. We talked about many different types of quadrilaterals not just the common rectangle and square. We explored their properties and were able to describe them.
