Food Technology and an Ancient Greek Feast!

25 Oct 2023

In history, we have really enjoyed learning about the ancient Greeks, especially their architecture. We explored the features of the buildings, including three different styles of columns - Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. We found many examples of buildings around the world that have been influenced by the buildings of ancient Greece times.

We decided to make models of the Parthenon and they are now finally finished:

This week has been our DT week, with a focus on Food Technology.  Our objective was to design and make a meal using seasonal food.  We thought about what seasonality is and how the seasons affect the food that is available.  Linking with our reflections about Harvest earlier this month, we thought about food that is harvested at this time of year.

We also had to decide the purpose of the meal and who it would be for. This was an easy decision…. we soon had the idea of making it for ourselves!  We decided that it would be fun to have an ancient Greek meal to celebrate all the learning we have done in our history topic.

We researched to find what food the ancient Greeks ate and what their feasts were like.  We decided that their diet was a healthy one and they ate many vegetables and fruit that are also available to us. We found that they ate many different types of beans and chickpeas and so we decided to make chickpea hummus.  We tried to make sure that we also had something from each of the food groups, so we included feta cheese, olives, olive oil and pitta bread, alongside our hummus and vegetables.

We created designs for our meal:

We found a recipe and thought about what we would need, along with the skills that we would be using:

After washing our hands, we then we set to work:

We made place mats decorated with ancient Greek writing and pictures and patterns similar to those we had seen on the Greek pots.

We listening to some Greek myths whilst we enjoyed our food!  Then we all took turns to share facts that know about the ancient Greeks.

In maths, we’ve been working hard on addition and subtraction.  Our focus has been on exchanging; we have been using practical equipment such as Base 10 and place value counters to help us to complete number operations involving exchanging:
