Magnets and Maths

24 Jun 2021

This week our focus has been on Magnets and in Year 4 especially, Multiplication!

The Year 4 children took their Multiplication test on Wednesday. This is an online assessment of their knowledge and recall of times tables upto 12 . They all took the test in their stride and we are sure they will have all done very well! Learning times tables is one of the key focuses in Class 3 because having a quick recall of these number facts can help in so many different aspects of maths, not just multiplication. To build up fluency and to help the children to practise their tables in a fun way, we do still encourage children to complete their 10 sessions on Times Tables Rockstars. The children have a short session to use TT in school, but we hope they are still having a few minutes at home each day or week. Short but regular sessions are proven to be the best way to learn. For those children still trying to crack a particular times table, they will also have their multiples cards to use!

Marvellous Magnets.

Our Science topic of forces moved forward this week to learn about Magnets. The children really loved playing about with the magnets and seeing the magnetisim in action. This afternoon we conducted an investigation to find out which magnet was the strongest. We thought a lot about how to measure this! The children did a fantatsic job of recording their results and created a bar chart with their findings.

Having seen the amazing creations that Class Four brought in from home recently, many pupils asked if they could also do a  home learning project, similar to the Class 4 pupils. So we would like to invite children to create a project all about Magnets at home to be brought back to school on Monday 19th July. Children are free to create anything as long as it uses or is about magnets or magnetism. I have included a few ideas below - the project can be as involved or straightforward as you would like! All pupils returning a home learning project will be rewarded with Dojos and the most interesting projects will recieve a small prize.

Some project ideas:

Create a fact file about magnets in action.

Conduct a science experiment at home involving magnets. (Maybe record you doing your experiment on a short video or in photos.)

Create a magnetic structure.

Create a collage of magnets in action.

Create a magnetic game that helps children learn their spellings in some way or helps them to practice their times tables.

Other magnetic games could be:

Maybe make your own compass and create a map to use with your compass.

Create a travel board game that uses magnets to stop the pieces getting lost.

Make a special box, with a magnetic catch.

Magnets are just fascinating so I hope you have a lot of fun putting these projects together! Please return your finished project on Monday July the 19th. We can then look at them and play with them together during our last week at school.

Have a wonderful weekend together!
