Class 3 - Art Week

11 Feb 2023

What a busy week, starting off with art with Mrs Field, alongside mental health awareness with Mr Whitford and ending with internet safety with Miss Rogers.

Art week

This week we have been using our art skills to produce mixed medium portraits inspired by L.S.Lowry and Kath Kallowitz.
We started our art topic by evaluating the art produced by Lowry and Kallowitz, highlighting the characters drawn as ‘soulless’ and zombielike’. We discussed the situations these people may have been in and asked ourselves how we have felt if we were working in the industrial factories of the 1900’s. We likened it to sharpening pencils every day for 50 years.

We then practiced our own portrait skills by drawing each other in group sittings. These 5 minute snap shot drawings helped to practice the basic drawing skill before we built on our knowledge further, learning about where eyes are positioned and using shading rather than line drawings for nose and mouth shapes.

We also explored mark making with charcoal – we really enjoyed smudging to create different effects.

For our finished portraits we merged all the skills we had learnt. We also added in the extra skill of colour mixing - using only five colours – the same five as Lowry. We were very proud of our achievements and enjoyed building our art skills this week.
