Comic Relief, Science and Maths

14 Mar 2024

It’s been another busy week, with a focus on science activities, as we continue our investigations to answer the Big Question 'Do living things need different things to survive?'

We have identified the different types of teeth in humans and their functions.  We learnt that teeth can be classified into the groups - canine, incisor, premolar and molar and each of these groups have different functions in beginning the digestive process.

We also planned and set up an enquiry to investigate the effect of sugary drinks on our teeth.  We used eggs to represent teeth and put the eggs in different drinks.

Some of us also had an idea that we could see what happens if we put some toothpaste on a small area of the eggshell to see if it protects it from staining.

We observed the changes in the eggs over several days and found that the eggs in fruit juice and coke had become very stained and the shells had become soft, causing the eggs to fall apart.  We noticed that the small area where toothpaste had been applied had not stained as badly as the rest of the egg.

We were able to draw some conclusions from our investigation.  We all agreed milk and water are good to drink and that we should not drink too many fizzy and sugary drinks.  We realised the importance of brushing our teeth regularly, especially if we have had food or drink that is high in sugar content.

We have now progressed onto thinking about other living things and food chains. We identified producers, predators and prey. We researched habitats using secondary sources then we constructed food chains in a variety of habitats. We have also been creating Venn diagrams to classify and group living things.

In maths, we have been focussing on measuring length and perimeter.
Year 3 have been practising using rulers to measure accurately.  We have been thinking about measuring in centimetres and metres and working out equivalent values within these units of measurement.

Year 4 have worked on equivalent measurements, thinking about distances measured in both metres and kilometres. We have also been calculating the perimeter of shapes by measuring the length of each side of a shape.

The week ended with Comic Relief Day.  We had lots of fun and enjoyed the comic relief activities and we are proud to have helped to raise money for other people.

Have a lovely weekend!  See you next week.
