Science - What is the Digestive System?

22 Feb 2024

Over the coming weeks, our curriculum focus is science. This week, we began our unit of work about  'Animals, including Humans'  and we have been investigating the parts and functions of the human digestive system.  First, we reflected on our previous learning about humans and discussed what we already know about nutrition and the different food groups that we need to eat.  We also remembered that our bodies have a skeleton and mucles for support, protection and movement and that these require nutrients from our food to function correctly.

We then found out that digestion is a process in our bodies that breaks down the food we eat into tiny parts to give us fuel and the nutrients we need to live. We thought about which type of science enquiry and learning skills we could use to find out more about human digestion.  We decided on researching using secondary sources and looked for information using computers and books.

Next, we began to investigate the functions of each of the organs in the digestive system.  We worked hard to understand what each organ does and how they connect together.  We focussed on using the correct scientific vocabulary, which was tricky because some of the works are challenging to read and say!

We worked together to order the functions in the digestive system.  Then, we researched to find information about each of the functions.

Next week, we will be investigating human teeth.

On Friday, we had a visit from a Buddhist Monk who has really helped us to understand what it means to be a Buddhist monk. He told us the importance of meditation in his religion and led us all to have time to meditate together both sitting and walking. We also looked a photographs and listened to him share about his faith and the order he belongs to. Earlier in the week we had also found out about the origin of Buddhism and the beliefs which are followed. We made our own games to help us understand what karma means and had fun playing them with our friends.

We're also looking forward to our visit to Stump Cross Caverns on Thursday.  We've been working really hard on our creative writing and hopefully, our experiences down the cave will inspire some good ideas for our next piece of writing based on the book 'The Street Beneath My Feet.'

Have a lovely weekend!
