How do Plants Survive?
19 Jun 2024
We have recently been working on science as our curriculum focus. We have enjoyed researching and investigating plants to answer the question ‘How do plants survive?'
First, we researched to find out about the structure of plants. We identified and named the parts of a plant, then found out about the role of the different parts.
We carried out an investigation to find out what plants need to grow well. We carried out fair tests; we deprived plants of one of the things we thought that they need, whilst making sure that they had all the other conditions. Some of us deprived the plants of water, others deprived the plants of heat, light or soil. We kept some control plants that had all the growing conditions that we think they need.
After a week, we found that the plants were not very healthy! Only the control plants were still growing well.
We have also investigated how water travels through plants to reach the different plant parts. We added food colouring to water so that we could observe the water moving. Then, we placed some celery stalks into the containers. We also placed some plant stems with petals into the water to see if the petals change colour when the water coloured water reaches them. We are now observing over time and looking carefully to see the water moving though the plant.
We used our research skills to find out the scientific names for the different parts of flowers. We also went outside to look closely at the flowers to see if we could identify the flower parts.
We learnt about the function of these parts in the pollination and fertilisation processes.
We learnt that once the seeds are formed, they play a crucial role in enabling the plant to reproduce. We investigated around the school to find different seeds and thought about the mechanisms that might be used to disperse the seeds away from the parent plants and trees.
We also planted some seeds in the garden and we’re looking forward to seeing them begin to grow.
