Stump Cross Caverns
29 Feb 2024
On Thursday this week we had a great trip to Stump Cross Caverns!
In our writing unit we are using the book 'The Street beneath my feet' as our stimulus for an explanation text and as part of this we wanted to explore what it is like under the ground to help inform and inspire our writing.
Our visit began with an introduction video where we listened and saw how the caves were first discovered and heard about how the land in this area has changed over time.
once we had our safety helmets on and torches ready we could start our descent, down the 65 steps into the first tunnel of the cave system.
We saw many different rock formations - stalactites and stalagmites, columns and pillars and flowstone. All were given names by the people who first discovered them by what they looked like. It was difficult to imagine that some of the formations have grown over the last 450,000 years!
When we returned above the surface, we were shown some fossils, some of which were found in the caves many years ago like the skeleton of 10 wolverines.
We have had a great day out and have lots of information and ideas to bring back to our writing in school!
