Week 2 in Class 2
13 Sep 2023
On Monday, we enjoyed beginning our history unit of work about the Ancient Greeks. We considered the meaning of the word ‘ancient’ and looked on a map to find the location of the country. We explored where the Ancient Greeks are placed in the timeline of history. We found that the Ancient Greeks lived over two thousand years ago and placed them on the timeline between 800 BC and 146 BC. We learnt that the time before Christ was born is labelled BC ‘Before Christ’. We also thought where the Ancient Greeks fit onto the timeline compared to other events in history that we already know about.
We are beginning to think about answers to the question:
How have the Ancient Greeks influenced the world today?’ and we have already realised that although the Ancient Greeks lived a very long time ago, there are many things in our current lives that have been influenced by them. We’re looking forward to researching to find out more!
In maths, our current focus is Place Value. We have been finding different ways of representing numbers and the value of number digits depending on their position within the number. We spent time partitioning numbers and used resources such as place value counters, part whole diagrams and base 10 to represent numbers.
We enjoyed beginning work on ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ in Guided reading. We shared the first two chapters and discussed the vocabulary that Roald Dahl uses to describe the characters, as well as making predictions about what might happen in the story. We found the story to be very funny and enjoyed looking at the illustrations by Quentin Blake. We then used our reading skills to retrieve information from the text to answer questions.
Have a lovely weekend!
