Class 3- Enrichment Week
19 Oct 2022
This week the whole school has been taking part in an enrichment week. We have been celebrating Black History Month and have been focusing on DT. Here's what we have been up to
Monday
On Monday we found out some key points of Black History, specifically the History of the Notting Hill Carnival - why it came into being and what it stands for today. We advanced our understanding further by reading about key persons of the Black civil rights movement including Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.
Tuesday
With the knowledge that the History of Black people is celebrated during events such as festivals we decided to have a go at creating an outfit that could be used at a celebration festival. We began our design process by analysing current examples of outfits from the Notting Hill Children's day - we picked out the parts that we liked and discussed what each part of the outfit could be made out of before linking this to the skills we may need to create something simular. After deciding sewing would be a key factor in creating an outfit we tested our sewing skills out on some small pieces of material to take forward to our design, makes stages of production.
Wednesday
Wednesday was our planning day. We thought about what resources we would need and how our outfits would look. We used our maths session to measure our model and then measure and cut out the appropriate piece of material to be the base of our costume.
In English we completed our star reading assessment for this half term.
Thursday
Thursday was a busy day turning our designs into reality. We applied the sewing skills Mrs Field had shown us on Monday and Tuesday to transform our blank pieces of material into colourful outfits suitable for a carnival.
We learnt an African dance in PE and learnt about how dance is an important way to communicate with others and how it can overcome language barriers.
In Music we have been listening to Bob Marley's One Love and have enjoyed singing along.
In English we learnt about the famous black footballer Pele and runner Usain Bolt. Some of the children were able to talk about other famous black sportspeople they knew. The children enjoyed researching their lives and finding out what made them such special sportspeople. They used this information to create a factfile on their person.
Friday
On Friday we shared our week's learning with the rest of the school and some of our parents.
Back in class we evaluated our products, thinking about what went well and how we could make them even better if we were to repeat the activity.
We read a text about Nelson Mandela in Guided Reading and answered questions based on the text.
As well as all of this learning and fun we have all been taking part in the mini marathon, running 2.6 miles.
Have a great weekend and half term and we will see you back in school on Tuesday 1st November. Next half term our class will be swimming on a Friday afternoon, so please can they bring their swimming kit with them every Friday until Christmas.
Here is a copy of our timetable for the second autumn half term.
