Class Three- Instruction Writing
29 Sep 2022
Over the first few weeks in Class Three the children have been focusing on instruction writing. We used the book 'How to wash a woolly mammoth' as our hook and worked towards creating our own version of the book.
We began by thinking where we see instructions in our lives and the different types of instructions, from written to online videos.
Next we picked out the features of a text that making it an instruction text; numbered sentences, imperative verbs, title, subtitle, bullet points, short sentences and time connectives. We did this by analysing lots of different examples of instructions.
During the unit we spent a lesson focusing on Imperative verbs, which the children were very good at using! We also focused on time connectives and which ones would be appropriate in instructions.
Then began the practical work the children got the opportunity to make a jam sandwich and the week after a hot chocolate with marshmallows. But in order to do this they had to first create their own set of instructions to tell an alien how they would go about making them.
Finally we put all our skills together to write our own instructions for washing a woolly mammoth.

I am sure you will agree there are some super pieces of writing here.
Have a great weekend.
