The Black Hat
17 Jun 2022
Another really busy and productive week in class three!
The Black Hat
This week we began our next story writing unit using the story "The Black Hat" as our inspiration. We have used a video retelling of the book from Literacy Shed to help us enjoy the story book together. So far we have only watched until 45 seconds, but we have already learnt so much about the main character. We have also explored and written our own noun phrases, determiners, adjectives, articles, prepositional phrases and clauses! Learning the correct grammatical terms for these different parts of speech helps to make children more aware of the word choices they are making, it also allows them to think more deeply about why authors have chooosen particular vocabulary. It can also be fun too!
Editing is a very important skill that all authors use when they are writing a piece of work. We often edit and improve our writing the day after writing some text. This allows us to read more carefully what is there, rather than what we thought we had written! It also enables us to have a second go at word choices and decide if there are better words or more words we could use to help paint a picture or create an effect.
Why do some people think that life is a journey?
This is our new enquiry question for our RE lessons this half term. The children were quick to see the connection between a journey having a beginning and an end much like our lives. We then explored this idea of metaphors - when we describe something as being something else. I asked the children to think of some of their own ideas for metaphors for life and I was really impressed by their ideas:
Life is like a story.
Life is like an adventure.
Life is a race.
Life is a game.
Life is a road.
Life is an achievement.
Some of the children were able to explain what these metaphors meant to them:
"life is a game because I like the idea of it being levels... Life is an adventure because I think life has good and bad moments." Sam C
"Life is like a game because on Mario you run and jump just like people in life." Oliver H
"Life is an adventure as I think my Mum and Dad say we are off on a walk and on the way you find something new..." Jessica
"Life is an achievement because it is really rare. " Charlie
"Life is a story because a story has characters and a beginning and an end." Lowansa
"Life feels like a long race and you are a tortoise because you are running very slow." Edward T
The children then shared the most significant events in their lives so far. It was lovely for the children to share some of their most important moments. There were happy and sad events recorded and a few broken bones!
As-tu un animal?
French this term is learning the vocabulary for our pets and holding a simple conversation about them in French. The children did really well with the pronunciation of the animals this week. They really listened to the different sounds. We talked about how the French alphabet is the same as the English alphabet but the pronunciation of the letters can be quite different.
The children then practised and rehearsed what they had learnt by writing the names of each of the animals.
Have a wonderful weekend! Lets hope the sunshine stays!
