Reading
in Class Three
Another fantastic week in class three and it has been a week filled with reading.
In our English sessions we have been busy exploring Egyptian Myths - and have enjoyed hearing about the many exploits of the very blood thirsty Egyptian Gods. We are going to be writing our own versions of the Egyptian Myth "Isis and the seven scorpions," next week. As well as reading myths we have been enjoying our class novel Flat Stanley and the great pyramid robbery. The story has just reached a tipping point and the children have been using their prediction skills to suggest what might happen next. We have also been reading even more during our history sessions, to learn more about Tutankhamun, Pharaohs and tombs as we come to the end of our History theme.
Reading really is the foundation for children's learning and we see it as a priority to get all our children reading fluently and maybe most importantly, we hope to help them develop a love of reading and books during their time in school. By doing so we build on their solid foundations in phonics and decoding from Key Stage one and giving them the skills to flourish as independent readers in upper key stage 2 and beyond.
Today, I needed to move our lessons around a little, to fit in our interview with Reverend Ian, and I was so impressed at the number of children who were genuinely disappointed when they thought they would miss their reading session. This positive attitude towards reading is exactly why Class Three are making such great progress in their reading skills.
Every week the children read daily for 30 minutes. During these sessions, the children read their AR book and complete their quizzes. Everyone should also be bringing home AR reading books to read daily, if possible, at home. When they finish these, they can bring them back and quiz and swap for a new one. These quiz points work towards the their AR targets and I'm pleased to announce that some have already managed to hit them! Still two more weeks, so plenty of time to gain the points!
As part of our constant drive to read as much as we can and as widely as we can, we are also joing in with The Great Book Hullabaloo - see details on seperate page! This will be happening the week after next and it will be wonderful to hear from new authour Simon Farnaby.
Have a wonderful weekend albeit a soggy one! (Although that just means plenty of time to read if stuck inside...)
