Class 3 - Tuesday 19th May
17 May 2020
Good morning Class Three. It's beginning to warm up! Our learning project this week,
Under the Sea, has already inspired lots of you! Chloe has been deep-sea diving using her VR headset, whilst Jacob has already made his very own miniature submarine! Your handwriting poems were also brilliantly varied. I remember
Tom's octopus and
Chloe's and Florence's very calm and reflective poems especially! Remember any time that you spend watching
The Blue Planet or
Blue Planet 2 on BBC iPlayer is counted as learning time not tech time!
Story Writing
This week we are going to be working on a short film all about a lighthouse. You can watch it here
https://www.literacyshed.com/the-lighthouse.html#
After watching this wonderful mini film please create a storyboard or movie board of the main events in the tale. I have included a couple of blank templates
here and
here to give you an idea of how to set out your storyboard. (You can print either of these or create your own in your workbook. )
Please send me your completed boards to the class email.
Spellings
After having some practice of your words using the usual look - cover - write - check approach, then please look up and learn how to spell the names of the world's major oceans and seas. When you think you have cracked them, have a game of letter jumble to see how quickly you can spell after they have been jumbled up. (Remember you can play this outside using larger letters hidden all over the garden!)
Reading
Okay, reading superstars, only 4 days left... Well done to Jacob who has joined our now huge list of Target Readers! I am so very proud of how hard you are all working on this. Several of you are just a book or two away from the target, so don't give up!
Please read for 30 minutes from your current AR home reading book today and quiz if needed. (Remember to keep those quiz scores at 85% or higher.)
If you are beginning to get short on AR reading books then don't dismay. Click
here to find our guide which signposts where to go to find free, books and texts on AR. You can also find this information in the Enrichment section of the website!
Maths
Year 4:
I have set you a quiz on PM for you to have a quick revision of yesterday's learning.
Today we are thinking about creating symmetrical patterns and pictures.
It is your turn to try and create some figures that are symmetrical: Choose one or both of these activities.
-t-n-1281-symmetry-activity-sheet-_ver_3.pdf-
-T2-M-275-Reflection-Symmetry-Activity-Sheets_ver_3.pdf-
Then if you are feeling creative, use
squared paper, to have a go at creating your own symmetrical pictures! (If you want a challenge have a go at using a diagonal line of symmetry.)
Year 3:
Watch
this video which explains what a Tangram is then cut out your own
tangram puzzle pieces. (You might want to put these on card if possible as you will be using them a few days!)
Now - name each of the 7 shapes and tell an adult or bother or sister about the properties of the seven shapes (See here for
an answer)
Have a go at the following challenges: how many can you complete?
1. Using all the pieces create a rectangle.
2. Using all the pieces create a rhombus.
3. Using all the pieces create a triangle.
Free Play – Now be creative and make some sea animals with as many or as few pieces as you like.
Please send pictures of this shape work to me via the class email. I would love to see your work!
Healthy Body & Healthy Mind.
Being active is so important for a happy body and a happy mind. So make sure you get active today!
Have you tried Yoga? Maybe try some yoga using the Cosmic Kids Youtube channel. There are lots of ‘Under the Sea’ themed yoga workouts and even a Moana-themed adventure! Or simply get stretching to some relaxing deep-sea sound effects.

Learning Project: Under the Sea.
Your learning project this week focuses on life in and around the seas and oceans. Your learning can focus on the strange and wonderful creatures and plants that call the ocean their home. You may also want to think about how humans affect this delicate environment and how you can be part of the solutions.
As usual, use the ideas below as a starting point but follow your own interests and creative ideas for how you explore this learning.
● Exploring the Blue Abyss
Can you remember the oceans of the world? Find out about the five different layers of the ocean (Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone, Midnight Zone, Lower Midnight Zone or Abyss and the Trenches). Sea creatures adapt incredibly to live in specific layers where the conditions, such as the temperature and light levels, can change. Explore the creatures that are found in each layer of the ocean and create a fact file for each ocean layer with a labeled diagram.
● Submarine Sculptures
Take a look at pictures of real submarines for inspiration and create your own model submarines from different materials found at home e.g. plastic bottles, paint, coloured pencils, string, paper mache, sweet wrappers, tin foil and cardboard. When collecting materials, think about the suitability of each material. Alternatively or in addition, you could design and create a boat to carry a load on the ocean using junk modeling.
● Time to Talk: Preventing Pollution
Talk to different family members about what they know about plastic waste (e.g. plastic bags, six-pack rings and microbeads) that ends up in the ocean. You could do this by creating a questionnaire and carrying out interviews (perhaps over Facetime with adult supervision?). Discuss how you could help reduce ocean pollution and work together to create a persuasive poster or video to reduce plastic waste.
● Understanding Others and Appreciating Differences:
Reef Research - The Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing that is visible from space! Encourage your child to take a virtual tour of the reef using
AirPano and create a poster or video to promote the Great Barrier Reef. Remember to use scientific language relating to the habitats and species groups found in the reef. Can you identify the main threats to The Great Barrier Reef and include these too?
I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic work today! Remember you can message anytime on Purple Mash or via our class email!
Be kind to yourself and to others. Missing you all immeasurably! (Is that a word?)
