Class Three Pilgrimage
29 Jan 2020
We had the most fantastic day on our pilgrimage from the Cathedral to Fountains Abbey on Tuesday. The rain and mud did not deter us!
In the Cathedral, we thought about what it would be like to be a monk entering this splendid building, after a difficult and cold journey. We then looked for clues, ideas and inspiration about the founder of the Cathedral, St Wilfred. The children especially enjoyed exploring the crypt and soaking up its rich history. The children showed great respect when working inside the Cathedral, talking quietly and moving around sensibly. We were all very proud of them.
Our Pilgrimage then began properly as we walked from Studley Roger to the Abbey. The ground was especially muddy and made our journey feel even further than it was. But the children persevered and didn't complain, much! In the valley, we considered what it would have been like for the monks on their journey all those years ago and the children thoughtfully considered how difficult it would have been back then.
After finally eating our lunch in the warmth at Fountains abbey, the children still had the energy to explore and learn much more about the creation of Fountains Abbey and how the monks came to live in the valley and making it their home.
We are really pleased to have been able to support the National Trust in trialing this project and the children's suggestions and hard work are helping to create a wonderful learning resource for other children who visit the abbey in the future. Thank you also to parents who helped the day to be such a success by sending your children well wrapped up and prepared for the day!
