Class Three- Online Safety

08 Feb 2024

On Tuesday we took part in a national online lesson as part of Safer Internet Day. Alongside many other primary schools across the country, we learnt about GenAI - Generative Artificial Intelligence. We learnt that computers are able to learn just like we do and the more they learn the better equipped they are to help us. We saw examples of how GenAI helps humans; from robotic vacuums, fingerprint identity security, streaming service suggestions and much, much more! Another surprise was that AI - in all its forms - has been developing for over 70 years!

We learnt also about the many different jobs that are available in the creation of GenAI. Included in this was jobs in the medical sector. We discussed the question "Would you trust an AI robot to perform an operation?" The majority said no, for many different reasons, including power cuts, errors and just instead wanting a human to deal with. Our favourite part of the lesson was drawing a rabbit, with long ears, a tennis racket, hat and trainers. We then compared our drawings to several GenAI images. This was really interesting as we saw the genAI images were different, just as our individual pictures were. Connecting us back to Safer Internet Day, we considered the safe use of genAI technology and discussed the need for adult supervision, to not share personal details and to access only age appropriate applications.

Miss Rogers then delivered a Collective Worship talking about changes and reminding us how we can stay safe online.

In class we also spent time doing lots of fun activities and everyone in school has created a poster to show their understanding of online safety. Mrs Acheson is going to judge the posters and the winning one is going to be turned into a computer desktop and put on all of our children laptops in school!

This week has also been Children's mental health week. We have done lots of activities in class promoting mindfulness and good mental health. Miss Wray led a Collective Worship to explore this year's theme "our voice matters" We also watched The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse and did some drama and art activities linked to the book and our emotions.

We also began art week by designing our own Chinese dragon, but the snow has meant we will have to finish this work after half term.

Have a lovely half term everyone!
