Holes and The Mayas

29 Apr 2022

We have had a busy but lovely first week back together in Class 4.

We were very excited to start our new text for guided reading today. It's 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. We began by looking at the front cover and the blurb and discussing what we thought the book might be about. The children had lots of imaginative ideas. We then read the first few pages together which gave us a couple more clues, but they also opened up a lot more questions for us. We're looking forward to next week to see what else we find out.

Here are the children's initial predictions:

This week, we have also started our new history unit, which is Ancient Maya. We began by going back through British history and creating a timeline of the historical eras that we knew. The children did really well putting them in chronological order and labelling other important events.

We then discussed what World history was happening at the same time as these eras. We discovered that Ancient Maya began in around 2000BC at the time of the Bronze Age in Britain. We also found out that The Maya period went on for thousands of years.

Next, we went on to research where on earth the Mayas settled. The children discovered that the Mayas began in Asia and then moved to central America where they settled, at the time this was called, Mesoamerica. We found out that the area covered modern day Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and part of Mexico, and we labelled these on maps.

We are looking forward to finding out lots more about Ancient Maya.
