Class 4 - Friday 22nd May

19 May 2020

Good Morning Class 4

Happy Friday everyone! laughlaugh

Today is the last day before half term, which means you only have to listen to me for one more day, and then you get a week off from me! smiley I promise not to give you any work to do next week. laugh

A joke as it is Friday...

'What do you call a boomerang that won't come back?'

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the (very funny!) answer.

We have two birthdays coming up, Oli and Jana, both 11 on Friday 29th May. Happy Birthday to you both. laugh We hope you have a wonderful day with lots of cake!

Here are the answers to yesterday's grammar activities:

  -Year 5 grammar 6 answers.docx-

  -Year 6 grammar 6 answers.docx-

These are your tasks for today. Remember, you can do the tasks in any order, and you don't have to do everything if you don't have time.
yes

PE:

Have a look at the below link. There are lots of ideas for different PE type activities that you could do at home; give one a go!

Reading task:

Reading is the most important task I put on here so please make sure you do it, even if you don't do everything else!
Your reading task is to read for 30 minutes today. You should use your reading book for AR. Remember, when you complete a book, you can still do your AR quiz as you normally would at school. Follow the link below:

https://ukhosted79.renlearn.co.uk/6706937/

We have one extra person who has met his AR reading target, and that is Tom S! Well done Tom. If you haven't already met yours then you are running out of time! There are so many of you that are very close; don't waste your good work!

Maths task:

I have set you an activity for today. Year 5s yours is about starting to multiply fractions, and Year 6s yours is about multiplying fractions by fractions. smiley Remember to go through the lesson before you do the questions. If you find it difficult, you can go back to the lesson and have another go at the questions. I will be checking how you're getting on as the day goes on.

Spelling task:

Please can you choose 5 words at random from the appropriate spelling list below. Please choose words that you haven't used before, and that you can't already spell! I would like you to find out the meaning of your 5 words so that you fully understand them, and then I would like you to write a short tale or story that includes these 5 words. You need to use them in the correct context so that your tale makes sense.

I have set up a '2do' task on Purple Mash for this if you would like to do it on there, or you can do it in your exercise book. Please underline the 5 spellings (or write them in a different colour) and draw me a picture that links to the tale/story.

Writing task:

I would like you to write a story opening for an 'under the sea' adventure story. Remember, the opening of a story is all about catching the reader's attention and making them want to read on.

To do this, think carefully about your use of figurative language, sentence openers, sentence types and punctuation.

You need to create an image in the reader's mind so they can see what is in your imagination. You can write this in your exercise book or type it on a computer.

Being kind...

It's now half term so you will have lots of opportunities to do kind things. Think of all that time you'll have without my activities to do. Try to do something lovely each day, as all of you are lovely
smiley

Learning project:

The focus for this week's project is 'under the sea'.

The projects this week aim to provide opportunities for you to learn more about life in and around the sea. Learning may focus on the strange and wonderful creatures and plants that occupy our oceans, their habitats and how human beings affect this environment.

This afternoon, you can either continue the project you began yesterday or start a new one.  smiley

Working Together to Save Our Oceans - The BBC programme Blue Planet 2 sparked an outcry about the health of our oceans and the huge threat caused by plastics, but lots of people around the world are working hard to help solve this problem. Have a read about Madison Edwards, a 12 year old environmental activist. Can you do your bit to help preserve our oceans by keeping a ‘plastic diary’ recording how much single-use plastic your family uses. Write down one thing that your family will do to use less plastic.

 ● Speeding Through The Seas- Sailfish are the fastest fish in the ocean. Can you be just as speedy and complete the following 5 activities as fast as possible: Star jumps, tuck jumps, press-ups, squats and lunges. Record how many repetitions of each activity you can perform in 1 minute. Can you beat your personal best? Can you record your heart rate (beats per minute) after each activity?
 ● Pirates: Daring Figures of History or Brutal Sea-Thieves?- Many books have been written and movies made about pirates. But who were the real pirates of the past? Can you explore these facts about real pirates from history? You could create a fact file or information report about what you have learned, including key dates and figures. Alternatively, you could create a ‘wanted’ poster for a pirate, including facts about his/her deeds and adventures.

 ● Bioluminescence: Lighting up Our Oceans - Many sea creatures possess a fascinating light-producing ability called bioluminescence. Some fish dangle a lighted lure in front of their mouths to attract prey, while some squid shoot out bioluminescent liquid, instead of ink, to confuse their predators. Find out about bioluminescence and how some sea creatures rely on this for their survival. You could then choose a sea creature which uses bioluminescence (like the anglerfish) and create a poster fact sheet about it, including what bioluminescence is and how your chosen sea creature uses it.

 ● Artwork to Light up Your Life- Following on from what you learned about bioluminescence, create a bioluminescent sea creature inspired piece of artwork. Based on the resources you have available at home, you could choose to express this as a drawing or as a model. Use bright colours and try to be as realistic as possible.

That's it from me for now. smiley I hope you all have a really lovely half term; you deserve it after all your hard work at home. You have done amazingly! Enjoy what you have...the sun, your family, the fresh air, exercise, time...I will be back a week on Monday.

If you need me, you can email me.

Missing you all lots,
Mrs Barker
