Class Three- Newswise

20 Jun 2024

This half term we have got the opportunity to take part in a brilliant programme run by a team working with the Guardian newspaper. The programme ties in English and PSHE and offers students the opportunity to develop their critical literacy skills as well as giving them the skills to produce their own newspaper reports.

We have only just started the project but already we have begun to turn our classroom into a newsroom we decided on the name The Grantley Gazette. The children each have a press pass that they wear during the sessions and they have their journalist pack which they only use at these times. The pack includes their reporters notebook and pencil, a poster, a badge and a journalist portfolio book.

On Tuesday we had a question and answer session with a BBC journalist. We got the opportunity to ask her lots of questions. We found out she was 21 and her funniest report was about a dog who got it's head  stuck in a fence. She started her job as a reporter when she was 18 years old, and loves her job very much. She has been on a red carpet and interviewed someone off Peaky Blinders.

Beginning the work we looked closely at news to decide if we thought the article was real news or fake news. We decided what made a story news and created a definition of what news is. We then had the opportunity to take on the role of a reporter and decide who we would interview for a given story and what we would ask. We were picture editors and had to select the most appropriate picture for the article and write a caption to go with it. Finally we were sub editors and we had to proof read and correct an article which had already been written.

We found out about the different sections of news, from sports, entertainment, international and politics. We then read different headlines before we ranked them on how newsworthy they were. To do this we had to discuss how we would judge the newsworthyness of each story. We decided it depended on the subject, timing, place and people involved.
