Class Three- Fieldwork in Ripon
31 Jan 2024
This half term our afternoon focus is on Geography, answering the question 'should Ripon have a train station?'
We spent several lessons looking at the location of Ripon, researching the county of North Yorkshire and then we compared North Yorkshire to the West Midlands.
Alongside this we focused in on Ripon's old train station, the children each produced a non-chronological report to show off the information they had found out.
After lot so comments from the children about it not being fair that Ripon does not have a train station now, I explained that we would be going into Ripon to put these questions to the public. In small groups we produced a short survey and then on Wednesday 31st we went into Ripon and asked the public.
The children were really enthusiastic and after over coming some initial nerves they all filled each of the copies of their questionnaire. It was lovely to see the children discussing the people's responses.
All of the groups were so polite when addressing the public and one lady even came up to Miss Rogers to say 'the children had made her day and what a brilliant reflection of our school they were.'
Maybe an indictaion of how small Ripon is but during our morning doing the survey the children spoke to someone who lives opposite the old train station building and a grandchild of the person who used to own the old train station. On the way back to school the bus took us past the old site of the train station,
which is now houses.
Now back in school we are going to analyse our results before we write a balanced argument next week outlining the reasons for and against a new train station being built in Ripon.
Have a brilliant weekend and we will see you all next week.
