Writing in Class Three
This week we wanted to share with you the fantastic writing that we have produced over the last two weeks.
As a class we read the first chapter of this wonderful story by Shaun Tan. I say read, but it is actually a graphic novel, so there were no words! Instead we enjoyed deciphering the beautiful illustrations which told the heart breaking story of a family about to be separated when the father left to find a better life far away.
After being inspired by the beautiful story unfolding in the book, we imagined being Dad, facing leaving his only child behind. We then wrote a letter of goodbye. We thought a lot about what Dad would want to say in his letter and the children decided that the different purposes of explaining, saying sorry, sharing memories all needed to be included.
I am really proud of how well the children empathised with the characters in this story and really put themselves in Dad's shoes to write some very emotive letters. Grab a tissue and have a read!
(The writing may not look totally polished, this is because after we first write, we then spend a lot of time editing, re-reading and changing parts of our work...We have learnt from visiting writers that this part of the writing process is maybe one of the most important, even if it doesn't look so good!)

We only read to the end of chapter one of this graphic novel, but the children are more than welcome to borrow it from School so they can enjoy finding out what happens to this little family. It is a really great book that explores the themes of migration, change, diversity and tells the story of being a stranger in a strange place. I would encourage you to share the book with your children. It is really lovely!
Have a wonderful weekend. Look after one and other and we will see you again Monday Morning.
