Class Three- First Week Back Geography
13 Jan 2024
We have had a great first week back in Class Three.
Mrs Lewis joined us on Tuesday and we were very excited to have her back with us. Mrs Lewis is going to be teaching most of our writing lessons and she got started straight away.
On Wednesday we found out this half term we would be doing Geography as our block subject. Our big enquiry question is 'Should Ripon have a train station?'
It was lovely to see how engaged the children were just by hearing this question. We have hit the ground running this week. The children wrote down their initial ideas to the question.
Then we began by locating Ripon. We started from far out recalling the countries that make up the UK and locating their capital cities.
We then explored the counties that make up England, there are 48. We spent time exploring a map of England using a compass to work out the positions of different counties, hopefully this helped us learn the names of some new counties too.
We then focused on on our county, North Yorkshire. The children found this on the map, looked at which counties border ours and then researched North Yorkshire to find out about physical features including rivers and landmarks. For those who worked quickly they were able to find out about famous people from North Yorkshire and other facts about the county.
On Friday we narrowed our map searches further to locate Ripon on the Uk map.
Next we worked in groups, each group was given a selection of different maps and given time to explore them. We then talked about the different types of map and how each type shows information. Finally we began reording this in our books and for each type of map we studied it closely and recorded what we could see about Ripon from that map.
We will finish this next week.
Have a lovely weekend.
