Scientific Investigators!
01 Apr 2022
It has been another very busy week in Class 4. The children have been working really hard on our termly assessments - the Year 6s in particular. I am so proud of their resilience, perseverance and wonderful work ethic.
On Tuesday, we had a whole school afternoon all about Islam. We particularly focused on Ramadan as it has just started; the children really enjoyed finding out about the different practices and beliefs associated with this time in the Islamic calendar.
The children have been really engaged in our science unit of Materials over the last few weeks.
Last week, the children worked in groups to investigate what affects the speed of dissolving. Firstly, we looked at what a solution is and the difference between soluble and insoluble materials. When completing the investigation, the children created a question to investigate; they decided which vairbale they would changce and which would stay the same; and they decided how to measure the results. They then created a table to capture their results and carried out their investigation.
When it was complete, they wrote up their method and conclusion and then went on to create a bar chart with their results. They did brilliantly and are quickly developing their skills in scientific enquiry.
This week, we focused on different ways to separate mixtures. I had created mixtures such as sand and water, and flour and raisins, and the children had to decide which process would best seperate them. We discussed how this, along with dissolving, are reversible reactions.
Once we had finished, the children wrote up the methods that they had used.
