Stand with Ukraine, Kensuke and more!
24 Mar 2022
We have had another busy and exciting week in school. The children have been working incredibly hard, and we have got through a lot of content - so well done all! We have been missing the children who are currently isolating at home, and we really hope you are back with us soon.
Here are a couple of homework activities you could do if you're feeling up to it. These are more in line with this week's Year 6 homework, but Year 5, you can definitely give them a go too.

On Wednesday, the Charity Committee organised a very successful Stand with Ukraine day. The children came to school in yellow and blue clothing (which they did really well!); we had a cake sale at playtime and after school (thank you to all who provided cakes); and all children did a sponsored silence at lunchtime! We were really impressed with how well the children did at the silence; they took it very seriously and were actually silent!
I was very proud of the Class 4 members of the Charity Committee who organised the whole day and ensured that it all went smoothly. A huge amount of money was raised for a wonderful cause - £868.28 at the last count!
Here are a few photos of our fun day...
Over the last few weeks in guided reading, we have been reading Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.
This is the story of a boy called Michael, whose parents buy a yacht and take him to sail off around the World. Washed overboard in a fierce storm, Michael finds himself on the shore of a remote island, and soon discovers he is not alone. Kensuke, a former Japanese soldier, survived the war and the bombing of Hiroshima, but his family perished. As an extraordinary bond forms between the two, Kensuke faces a heart-breaking choice: can he give up the secluded life he's built for himself to help reunite Michael with his parents?
We have loved sharing this book together in class. We now only have one chapter left, and can't wait to find out how it ends.
During guided reading, we discuss and answer a range of questions which are all based on different content domains. The content domains just explain the type of question, for example are they based on the meaning or words in contexts or is it a question that relies on summarising.
This week, the children wrote their own questions based on the chapter we had read, chapter 9. They had a number of content domains which they were focusing their questions on.
In maths, the children have been working really hard. This week, we started looking at area and volume, and then we have been looking at the translation and reflection of shapes. We have also had been drawing 2d shapes with specific requirements such as angle size and edge length.
