Maths and Maps

The children have been working really hard in maths over the last few weeks mastering fractions. They have done incredibly well at what can be a tricky concept to learn. They have learnt: how to compare and order fractions; how to find equivalent fractions; how to simplify fractions; about improper and mixed number fractions: how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions; how to find fractions of amounts; and plenty more. I am so proud of the links they've made and how well they've done, but also of how well they've persevered when it was a challenge.
In Geography, we have been enjoying continuing with our work on natural disasters.
We have been researching where in the world the most volcanoes are and the most earthquakes occur. We discovered that the edge around the Pacific Ocean is dominated by both; this is known as the Ring of Fire. We then went on to discover why these natural disasters occur in these places. We found out about tectonic plates and the impact of the friction that is created when they rub against each other or move towards or away from each other. Next, we went on to learn about what causes an earthquake or what causes a volcano to erupt.
Alongside this work, we have also been focusing on our geography knowledge of the world. We have learnt a very catchy song about the continents and have also identified many of the countries of the world. We have looked at lines of latitude such as the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn as well as how the Earth is split into the northern and southern hemisphere. We have started to learn about the Prime Meridian and how and why time zones are created by meridians.
