First Aid, writing and History

17 May 2023

Another fun-filled week in class one.

On Monday, we had a visitor; Mr Atkinson came in from sporting influence to teach us some basic First Aid. He talked to us about how we can help keep safe and what to do in an emergency. We talked about how to place a call to the emergency services and role played how to do this. We had a look inside a first aid kit and talked about what the different things were used for. It was a very interesting session. Thank you to Sporting Influence.

In class this week, our year ones have been working hard.Over the last two weeks, we have been looking at Kennings Poems. We have spend time reading and analysing this style of poetry, building our knowledge so that we could confidently write our own.
The children have worked hard to identify the features of a kenning poem as the structure of this style of poetry is very specific. They identified that this type of poem has:
  • an 'A' at the start of each line.
  • There are three words on each line
  • Can be on any topic, idea or thing.
  • It describes a subject without giving its name.
  • Each line has two nouns or a noun and a verb.
We planned and wrote poems of our own, each about an animal. Take a look at them and see if you can guess what our poem is about. We performed them to the class on Friday.

Meanwhile, the reception have been looking at people who help them. We have had lots of conversation about people that may help us if we are in trouble and those that help us everyday (like all of our lovely parents!). The children did some writing about this and have enjoyed roleplaying the different jobs.

In History, we have been learning about Neil Armstrong. The children have loved this topic and found his journey to space very interesting. On Wednesday, we focued on why he is famous. The year ones researched Neil Armstrong on the computers to find out more then made notes on their findings. Then on Thursday, we looked at Neil Armstongs journey to the moon. They travelled at 24,200 miles per hour!
