Black History Month
26 Oct 2023
October has been Black History Month, in school we have been focusing on celebrating black women.
Over the course of the month we have had several Collective Worships where we have learnt why we have Black History Month and an introduction to some influential black women.
Each class has then chosen one black woman to learn about in detail.
In Class 2 we have been finding out about Florence Price who was an African-American composer.
In 1933 she overcame prejudice to become the first black female composer to have her work performed by a major orchestra. Her music combined the traditions of classical music with the sound of spirituals and West African rhythms and dance from her own culture.
We watched a video about her life and achievement. We then enjoyed listening and moving to her music following traditional Juba dance moves.
In Class Three we looked at Mary Seacole. We watched videos about her life and used our tablets and laptops to carry out further research. We then wrote our notes up.
Mary Seacole was a very caring woman, she wanted to help other by being a nurse. But she faced lots of discrimination because of the colour of her skin. She didn't let this stop her though.
To mark the end of Black History Month, we had a Collective Worship which gave us a chance to share our class work with the whole school.
