Diary writing and maps

15 Jun 2022

For the last term, the children have worked hard each week to write a diary. Our focus is usual what we did at the weekend but this week, we were able to write about something very exciting... our school trip!

The children started off by making picture maps of all the things we had done at Studfold Adventure trail and some annotated their pictures with key words. This would help us with our writing later and it was fun to do!

Next we thought about the features of a diary: it needed to be written in the past-tense, be written in chronological order as well as have capitals and full stops. Class 2 thought, that sounded too easy so we had some extra challenge:
  • Use different punctuation- a comma, question mark or exclamation mark.
  • Use time conjunctions (then, next, after)
  • Use subordinating conjunctions (because, while, when)
Finally, we got writing. The children worked really hard, making sure they had lots of detail about our day. Here is some of their writing:

Over the next few weeks in Georgraphy, we are looking at our local area. So far, we have walked our school grounds, thinking about what it would look like from above which helped us to make a map. We worked in small groups to make one part of the school the pieced it altogether to make a complete map.

This week, we considered human and physical features. The children identified these features and worked together to sort images of school. Then using our new knowledge of the school, we made simple maps with a key. It was hard to draw our maps but we persevered and produced some lovely work.

Last Friday, we also enjoyed our last Forest School session. The children have loved exploring the outdoors more, learning about plants and flowers as well as developing lots of team work skills. A huge thank you to Mrs Whitford for planning our sessions, we have loved it!
