Seeds and Story Writing

23 Apr 2021

We’ve had another busy week in Class 2 and enjoyed working together and playing with our friends.

Our current learning focus is Science and we have been investigating the topic ‘Plants’.  We are working on identifying and naming a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.  We have been using books and the internet to find pictures of  different plants and name them.
Some of us chose to work on a creative task, to make collages of flowers that we found in our research:

We have been thinking about the question ‘What do plants need to grow well?’.

Most of the sunflower seeds that we planted before Easter, are beginning to grow.  We talked about possible reasons why some of the seeds did not begin to grow.
This week, we planted beans and we are looking forward to watching them grow.  We planted them in clear plastic cups, so we will hopefully be able to see the shoot appear, as well as the growth of the roots.  We plan to measure the growth of the beans over the next few weeks.
We remembered that ‘Observing over time’ is a type of scientific investigation.

In English, we enjoyed reading ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and we thought about the features of traditional tales.
Year One worked very hard on their reading skills, to sequence sentences about the story and put them into the correct order.

Meanwhile, Year Two worked on increasing their writing fluency.  They worked hard to include all the events, as well as remembering spelling and punctuation rules, along with neat handwriting.  Here are a some of their fantastic pieces of work:
