Learning About LS Lowry
Alongside our English and Maths work, our current curriculum focus is Art.   We have been learning about the artist L.S. Lowry and we found out that he lived in Lancashire in a place surrounded by factories, mills, and rows of terraced houses. He painted pictures of people going about their everyday life.  We were interested to find that some of Lowry’s paintings show things that happened during World War 2.

Some children inYear 2 chose to research about the war paintings and found these pictures on the internet.  One of our favourite LS Lowry paintings is called VE Day Victory and shows the people coming together to celebrate the end of World War 2.

Here are some of the facts that we have collected about LS Lowry:

We learnt that Lowry only used five colours –
We spent time exploring mixing colours together to create a new colour, as well as adding white to make paler colours and black to make them darker.  Like many of us, Lowry enjoyed visiting the seaside and painting seascapes. We practised mixing the 5 colours to create the colours for our seascapes:

We have been busy this week, working on the elements to create a ‘Lowry City’ collage, based on the painting ‘Coming from the Mill’
First, we created the background using paints.  We noticed that things in the distance need to be painted smaller than things that are closer.

We looked carefully at all the buildings in Lowry’s painting, then used marker pens, charcoal and pencils to draw buildings for our collage.

On Wednesday, we took a close look at all the people and animals in Lowry’s paintings. We found out that Lowry’s figures have been named Lowry’s ‘matchstick’ figures and we enjoyed listening to and singing a song that was written about them.
We thought about what the people in the pictures are doing.  Then, we drew the matchstick figures, using a range of drawing tools in black and grey -pencils, pens, felt tips, charcoal, crayon.
Finally, we began to assemble our Lowry collages.
We reminded ourselves about scissor safety rules.

We cut out the buildings and the people and positioned them onto the background, then glued the pieces together.
