Class 2 - Learning about life during World War 2.

25 Sep 2020

This week, we have progressed with our knowledge about the 1940’s and events that happened during World War 2.
Mrs Matthews has made an Anderson Shelter for us to do role play, when we are outside on the decking.  We have been thinking about why the shelters were needed.  We also found out that some people went to the underground tube stations to keep safe.

We thought about what it was like to be an evacuee during the war. We read a story about some children who were sent from the cities to be kept safe in the countryside, during the war years. We looked at a photograph taken in 1940, that shows us that some evacuees came to stay in Grantley during the war.
George showed us a ration book from the war.  We found out that there was a shortage of food during the war.  People had to share the food and could only have a small amount each week.  The shopkeepers could only sell food to people if they showed their ration book.
Tommy did some research at home to find out about members of his family who were in the war. He discovered that his great grandad was a soldier.  We looked at photographs and the army papers that show that he was a soldier, as well as the medals he earned for his service.

We are learning that these artefacts and pictures help us to understand about the past.

In maths, we have worked hard practising counting and writing numbers.  In year 2, we have been working on the place value of numbers; we have practised partitioning 2-digit numbers and we spent time thinking about different ways to represent numbers, using numbers, words and practical equipment.

Handwriting and spellings have been the focus of our English lessons and we all tried hard to concentrate and to write the letters carefully.  We have spent a lot of time working on this week’s spelling patterns, in preparation for our first spelling test of the year, on Monday.

We have been rewarded for our hard work and good behaviour with dojo points. We have already earned enough points to choose a prize from the box!
Thankyou for working so hard Class 2!

Have a great weekend.
Mrs Micklefield
