                                                   Look closely at the caterpillar's feet!  Do caterpillars really wear shoes?!
Good Morning Class 2!

I hope that you are all well and ready for today's activities. The Rainforest Project is now in full swing and I'm very pleased that so many of you are enjoying the activities.  Remember, you can do them in any order and you don't have to do them all if you don't have time.  For those of you who are in school today, I hope that you have a  fun day with Mrs Wicks and Mrs Acheson!                                                                                                                                                   

Wake up and shake up! Start the day with some PE, or maybe have a PE session later in the day.
Click on the link below to choose from the selection of activities. 
You could do a morning routine with Joe Wicks, find a fun activity on GoNoodle or try something new like yoga:

You might like to do one of these activities, or maybe go for a walk, run or do some cycling. 

As usual, try to spend at least 20 minutes reading a book or online reading book.

Here are some discussion questions for you to think about with an adult.                                                                                                          ...  they are like the ones we do in Guided Reading, at school:

Before the film, think about the insects that you already know about’– How many can you name? Can you describe a caterpillar? What is it? What does it do? What does it become?
Questions to ask:
Pause the film after 52 seconds –
 after he sets off into the woods.
• What do caterpillars do? • What has he got on his feet? • Why does he want to give away his shoes?
• Who do you think he will meet in the woods?
Pause the film after the caterpillar leaves the woodlouse.
• What shoes does he give to the woodlouse? • Why does he give him these ones? • How do we know the woodlouse likes them?
• What does the word jig mean? • Can we think of any action words to describe what they woodlouse does?
Pause the film when the caterpillar leaves the spider.
• Which word rhymes with most? Can we think of others? • Which shoes does he give to spider?
• She says they will keep her feet as warm as what? - This is a simile.  Can we think of similes for cold, wet, long, big?
Pause the film after he meets the earthworms.
• What word means the same as ‘surprised?’ • Why do worms not need any shoes?
Pause the film after he leaves the grasshopper
• What shoes does he give to grasshopper? • Which shoes would you prefer?
Pause the film after leaving the beetle.  How can we describe the beetle? • Why does he give the beetle party shoes?
As you watch the section on the stick insects ask: 
What  does the word camouflage means. 
Pause the film as the caterpillar tosses his shoes at the snail.
• Do you think the snail will have the pair of shoes? • Which ones?
Pause the film after the caterpillar leaves the fleas and says ‘I think it’s time to stop.’
• Why did the snail only take one shoe?

Your writing task today is based on the Caterpillar Shoes story.
Write a 'Thank You' Letter to Caterpillar
It's good to say 'Thank you!'   Your task is to pretend to be one of the creatures in the story.  Write a letter to caterpillar to thank him for his kindness.
Here are some ideas for you to write about in your letter:
How did you feel when the caterpillar gave you the shoes? Describe the shoes that you were given. What have you been doing with your new shoes?  Are the shoes useful? What do you do with the shoes when you go to bed?

Here are some words that you might need to use in your letter:
Dear, thankyou, kind, grateful, pleased, thrilled,
generosity, kindness, happy,
enjoying, dancing, exploring,
comfortable, beautiful, caterpillar,
flea, beetle, snail,  grasshopper, spider

Phonics and Spelling:
Today, we are going to practise the tricky words, using this fun game:
Choose your year group on the home page, so that you get the right words in the game.
Please make sure you have written this week's spelling in your spelling log.  Then, practise reading and writing the words ready for the spelling test tomorrow

You might also choose to practise your mental recall skills by doing one of the MyMaths games or you could log in to Sumdog or Numbots.

Today's music activity is to learn to sing this song with Beccy Owen from SingUp!
This is a funny song but with an important message about global warming.   

Be kind and help others
Don’t forget to try to do something to help someone else each day! There are lots of things that you could do to be helpful.  Have a think about what you could do to help someone.  

Here are the Learning Tasks for the Rainforest Project:

The project this week aims to provide opportunities for you to learn more about the world’s rainforests.
There are activities to find out more about the plants, animals and insects that inhabit the rainforest. 
You might also find out about food that originates there and the weather patterns in rainforests.

Mindfulness colouring
If you enjoy colouring, here are some lovely pictures of the rainforest for you to colour, or to copy from your computer screen.

● Where in the World are the Rainforests?
Using an atlas or online map, can you locate the continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America and South America) where rainforests can be found?

● Sketch a Spider Monkey or a Tree Frog
Can you create a detailed sketch of an animal that inhabits the rainforest? Use  pencils, crayons,  paint or any drawing tool you prefer.
Copy an image of a rainforest animal, thinking carefully about the patterns and tones.

● Fascinating Forest Floor- Can you create a model replica of the forest floor?
Collect materials from the garden or if you go out for a walk.
What does the rainforest floor look like?   Which animals and insects might be there?


● The Sounds of the Rainforests- 
There are many wonderful and intriguing sounds that can be heard in the rainforest.

You can zoom in to look closely and control the camera to move around the page to look at different things.

Which animal makes the most noise in the rainforest?
Can you predict which animals the sounds have come from.
Can you copy these sounds using objects from around the home?

Rainforest Insects

● There are lots of insects/mini-beasts in the rain forest.

● Look for mini-beasts living in the garden or on a walk. What are these mini beasts called? Which one do you like the best and why?
● Try drawing pictures of the mini-beasts you find.

Trees and paper
Many trees in the rainforest are chopped down to use for paper.  Can you create a poster about saving and reusing paper at home?
● Take a look at the The Rainforest Alliance website 
Iis packed full of information, resources and games which may support some of the above activities. 
There are stories, as well as an interactive tree house and a Jewels of the Earth game

A note for Parents, 
Just to let you know in advance.  On Friday, one of the suggested tasks is to find a simple recipe that uses chocolate and to follow the instructions to make it.  It might be useful to know about this to help with planning your shopping list!  A chocolate bar would also be useful for the fractions work on Friday.
