Class 2 - Firefighters at Fountains

14 Nov 2019

We began the week by thinking about Remembrance Day and all the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.  We thought about why people wear a poppy to show that they have remembered those who have died.  We found out that the First World War ended at 11 o'clock of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, over one hundred years ago.  This is why we show our respect quietly for two minutes at 11 o'clock on the 11th November each year.   The whole school came together for the two minutes silence. Our special visitors from the Ripon Fire Service also joined us, as we all quietly reflected and thought about the sacrifices others have made.

The Fire Crew came to school to help us understand more about Fire Safety.  The Fire Officer explained how we can prevent being harmed by fire and we learnt a set of rules that we can follow, including how to dial 999 if there is a fire.
We also found out that the Fire Crew have many other jobs, alongside putting out fires.  They pump water away from areas that have flooded and  rescue animals that have become trapped, they also help when there has been a traffic accident as well as spending time giving advice about fire safety and fire and smoke alarms.  We were very excited to be able to explore the fire engine and the equipment used by the firefighters.

This week, we began our focus in RE about what it means to belong to a faith community. We all belong to something and belonging is an important part of our lives.  We realised that we belong to many different groups but thought that our family group is particularly special to us.
We listened to stories from the Bible called 'The Lost Coin' and 'The Lost Sheep'.  We thought about the message that we might learn from these stories. We decided that the message is everyone in a group is special and important and that being alone or lost can make us unhappy.
We also thought about the signs that religious people have so that we notice that they belong to a religion.  We have gathered some signs and symbols showing that people belong to a Christian faith community and we are looking forward to finding out about some of the other faith communities next week.
